Your First Conversation

Your First Conversation

Your first conversation is relaxed and obligation-free. We listen to what you want support to make easier, answer your questions about availability and funding, and explain clearly what happens next. There is no obligation to decide anything on the day, and you are welcome to bring a family member or support person.

Your First Conversation

Your first NDIS support conversation should leave you with clarity, not pressure

Ask about supports, availability, communication, schedules, how your funding works and what happens before services begin. We may ask practical questions to understand your request, but making contact does not create a service agreement or require you to proceed.

Overview

In this guide

The main points, in plain language. Use these points to prepare for your first conversation.

What support are you looking for?

Describe the practical support being considered and what the participant wants that support to make easier or possible.

Where and when is support needed?

Share the usual suburb or support location, preferred days, times and any important scheduling constraints.

What matters most to the participant?

Please let us know about routines, goals, worker preferences, cultural considerations or other details that should guide the conversation.

Are there communication or accessibility preferences?

Let us know about preferred communication methods, processing time, a trusted interpreter or family member, mobility access or other adjustments that may help.

Who should be involved in next steps?

With participant consent, identify any family, carer, referrer, coordinator or trusted person who should be included in future communication.

Your First Conversation

A first conversation can be exploratory

You can explain what you are hoping to change, ask about service fit and find out what information is needed next. You do not need to make a decision during the first conversation.

  • Start with the routine or situation that matters most.
  • Mention your suburb, preferred times and communication needs.
  • Ask about suitability, availability and the next practical step.

Your First Conversation

Decide what you want to take away

Prepare for a first discussion without needing to have every detail settled.

A useful conversation ends with a shared understanding of what has been discussed, any information still needed and whether there is a realistic next step.

  1. 1 Ask for a summary if that would help.
  2. 2 Clarify who will contact whom next.
  3. 3 Take time to compare options or involve a supporter.

What it can look like

What the conversation can cover

For example, we might discuss your current routine, what you want support to make easier, who you would like involved and any questions about availability or funding.

  1. 1 Your routine and goals
  2. 2 People you want involved
  3. 3 Availability and funding questions

Example only. The right arrangement depends on the participant’s goals, circumstances, funding where relevant, suitability, availability and what Bright Heart Co can confirm.

Good to know

Your choices, funding and availability

You do not need every detail prepared. A few notes about goals, routines, communication preferences, location and the people you want involved are enough to begin.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

These answers cover first-contact questions, consent and next steps. Contact the team if your own circumstances need a more specific response.

Cannot see your question? Ask our team →

Do I need to have my whole support plan finalised first?

No. The first conversation can begin with what is currently difficult, what you want support to make possible and the practical details you already know.

What should I prepare before we speak?

If you can, bring a brief note about the support you want, your suburb, preferred times, communication needs and who you would like involved.

Can I ask about service fit without committing?

Yes. A first conversation is an opportunity to ask questions and check whether the support request and current availability look workable.

Can someone I trust join the conversation?

Yes, if the participant wants that person to be involved.
