Support with personal activities in Brisbane, shaped around your routines

Personal routines are highly individual. The practical task matters, but so do consent, communication, timing, privacy and the participant’s preferred level of involvement. Support can be shaped around established routines while creating opportunities to strengthen confidence and independence where that is a participant goal. Explore other NDIS supports or ask about getting started.

How it fits

How personal support can fit your life

Every arrangement is different. These are some of the ways people use personal support.

How it fits

Personal care and hygiene

Respectful support with showering, dressing, grooming and other personal routines, delivered with privacy, dignity and the level of assistance agreed with the participant.

Not sure where this fits in your plan?

Our team can discuss it with you, your family or your support coordinator. There is no obligation, and we use plain English.

02

Building self-care routines

Support to establish, practise or maintain familiar self-care routines with prompts, encouragement or step-by-step assistance where appropriate.

03

Preparing for the day

Practical assistance with morning or evening routines at the participant’s pace, respecting their preferences, communication style and independence.

04

Meals and hydration

Where this is within the agreed support scope, assistance can include help with eating, drinking and other mealtime routines.

05

Prompts, supervision or direct assistance

The level of help is discussed with the participant and may range from prompting through to hands-on assistance where appropriate.

06

Wellbeing and familiar routines

Where relevant to the agreed support, participants can be supported to follow familiar wellbeing, relaxation or settling routines that are part of everyday life.

Your choices

Personal routines, personal choices

Support with washing, dressing, grooming or other agreed personal routines should be discussed with sensitivity. Tell the team which parts you prefer to do yourself, the order you like and any privacy or communication considerations.

  • Preferred timing, pace and personal-care routines.
  • How permission is requested before each task.
  • Equipment, access needs and relevant support instructions.

Assistance with Personal Activities

Make the environment work for you

Plan personal assistance around your privacy, routines and agreed worker responsibilities.

Small practical details can change how a routine feels: having clothing within reach, allowing extra time, using a preferred cue or keeping a private space. Agree on what support is needed without assuming that every task requires assistance.

  • Identify what is already working well.
  • Use agreed prompts or assistance rather than taking over.
  • Review comfort and dignity as well as task completion.

What good looks like

Signs personal support is working for you

01

Consent every time

You are asked before each task and can say no or change the plan.

02

Your pace

Routines are not rushed to fit a schedule.

03

More independence

Workers help only where you want help.

Everyday example

What it can look like

What a morning can look like

For example, a participant might want help showering and dressing before work, with prompts for the steps they can manage themselves. The worker follows the agreed routine, respects privacy and checks in on anything that should change.

  1. 1 Routine agreed in advance
  2. 2 Independence encouraged where wanted
  3. 3 Privacy respected throughout

Example only. The right arrangement depends on the participant’s goals, circumstances, funding where relevant, suitability, availability and what Bright Heart Co can confirm.

Everyday support

Personal care that follows your routine

Personal support works best when it follows your routine, pace and preferences. Workers ask before helping, protect your privacy and allow you to act independently wherever you choose.

  1. 1 Showering, dressing and grooming at your pace
  2. 2 Morning and evening routines
  3. 3 Support with eating and, where this is within our service scope, medication prompts as agreed
  4. 4 Privacy and consent at every step

Questions to ask our team

Use these as a starting point. You can begin with the main question about personal activities support; the remaining details can be worked through with you.

  • Can I request a worker of a particular gender?
  • How do you protect privacy during personal care?
  • Which medication-related tasks can you confirm you offer?
  • What happens if a task needs a nurse?

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

These answers cover personal support, dignity, consent and worker fit. Contact the team if your own circumstances need a more specific response.

Cannot see your question? Ask our team →

How are personal routines agreed?

Preferences, privacy, consent, routines and practical support needs should be discussed before support begins and reviewed when circumstances change.

Can I discuss worker preferences?

Yes. Participant preferences and practical fit can be discussed, subject to availability and service requirements.

What if my routine changes?

Raise the change so the arrangement, timing and support approach can be reviewed.

How is privacy protected during personal support?

Workers ask for your consent, respect your privacy and dignity and keep professional boundaries throughout personal support.

You can ask about a worker’s gender or other preferences. The team will explain which suitable options are available; a preference does not confirm a particular worker. Medication-related tasks need a separate confirmation of scope and responsibilities.
